According to the Portuguese Institute of Registration and Notary Affairs, a total of 2160 descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews - who were initially expelled from Portugal due to religious persecution in the 16th century – acquired, since 2016, Portuguese citizenship. The majority of the successful applications came from descendants of Sephardic Jews that are either Israeli or Turkish nationals.
